Latisse Eyelash Enhancement

Allergan (the makers of Botox Cosmetic) have formally released Latisse which became available to pharmacies on Monday, February 9th. The company plans to spend roughly 36 million dollars in direct to consumer marketing (approx. three times the amount spent on Botox marketing when it was launched!) so you will undoubtedly soon begin hearing about this in the news and print ads. The information presented here is only a summary and is not meant to replace a formal consult with a physician.

What is Latisse?

Latisse solution is a prescription treatment applied nightly to the lashline of the upper eyelid. It is believed to affect the growth phase of the eyelash– increasing the length of the growth phase and increasing the number of lashes that are in the active growth phase. (The exact mechanism by which it does this is unknown). The active ingredient (bimatoprost) has been used for many years in a prescription eye drop used to treat patients with glaucoma. When it was noted that these patients were tending to grow thick, long eyelashes, the compound was reexamined for its aesthetic benefits.

What are the expected results?
The onset of effect is gradual. In the clinical trials, the majority of patients (78%) saw significant improvement by 2 months. At the end of 4 months-
  • 25% increase in length
  • 106% increase in fullness/thickness
  • 18% increase in darkness

If you stop using Latisse, it is expected that your eyelashes would return to their previous appearance over several weeks to months.

Who can and cannot use Latisse?
Anyone is a candidate unless they have a history of sensitivity to the active ingredient. Clients with a history of glaucoma would need to be monitored more closely by their ophthalmologist. Latisse can be used by contact lens wearers and any mascara use is fine. Even clients with current eyelash extensions can benefit.

What are the potential side effects?
Latisse may cause a darkening of the skin of the eyelid adjacent to the lash line, which is likely reversible if/when the product is discontinued

  • Latisse may cause a darkening of the skin of the eyelid adjacent to the lash line, which is likely     reversible if/when the product is discontinued
  • A small reduction in the intraocular pressure (no symptoms) which is not cause for concern in clients who do not have glaucoma
  • Irritation/rash/redness or itching of the eyelid, dry eye symptoms (These events occurred in less than 4% of patients)

Latisse is not expected to cause harm if it inadvertently gets into the eye– rinsing is not necessary in the event that this occurs accidentally. Notify your eye doctor if you are using Latisse, particularly if they are doing the ‘glaucoma test’.
